The Best Medicine

Laughter is a communal activity.

If you’re laughing all by yourself, people don’t think to themselves, “That seems like a happy fellow.  I think I’ll join him to share in his merriment.”  It’s actually just the opposite.  They think to themselves, “That guy’s nuts!” and flee in the opposite direction, avoiding eye contact.

What prompted this realization was finding a copy of James Thurber’s The Owl in the Attic for a couple of dollars at an estate sale, and it’s one of the few books I’ve read that really is laugh-out-loud funny.

I may have made a bit of a spectacle of myself.

Worth it.  😀

…I read something of Thurber when I was a kid … I am going to delve deep to find the book and re-read that again… (after I finish Vonnegut..!)
