Flammarian

I’ve seen this image many times on the web over the years, usually colorized, but never with an artist’s credit.

I did a little sleuthing, and although the artist’s name is lost there is a little information about its origins.  We know it first appeared in1888 in the book L’atmosphère: météorologie populaire, by astronomer Camille Flammarion.  He may have created the image himself– he had been apprenticed to an engraver as a child– but it’s believed he commissioned the work.

You can read a little more HERE.
